Is Rob the New Johnny Depp??

After shooting to fame in ‘Twilight’, hunk Robert Pattinson has the world at his feet - will he become the next Johnny Depp?

Screaming teenagers, award ceremonies and no escape from the paparazzi – the British actor’s life has changed massively since the vampire romance turned him into a global star.

When the 23-year-old was born in London in 1986, Johnny Depp (46) was the teen idol.

He shot to fame in the series ‘21 Jump Street’, but despite the age difference the Hollywood pair have many similarities:

• Neither were star pupils. Pattinson said he did not work hard in school, while Johnny preferred to play with his band down the pub.

• Rob is also a big music fan. He learnt to play piano aged three and guitar at 12. He now plays in a band called ‘Bad Girls’ and wrote two songs for the ‘Twilight’ soundtrack.

• Both became actors by accident. Pattinson got his first taste of the theatre at 15. He liked the atmosphere backstage and decided to give it a go.

• Johnny only started acting to earn money for his unsuccessful band ‘The Kids’. His friend Nicolas Cage (45) encouraged him to give up his music career and start acting professionally.

• Both like playing crazy characters. Depp was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. Next year he will play the Mad Hatter in ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

• And Robert Pattinson of course plays a crazy vampire who falls in love and last year starred as the eccentric Spanish artist Dali in the film ‘Little Ashes’.

With two more ‘Twilight’ films now in the making, Rob is definitely on track to become a superstar like Johnny Depp - but fame can be a fleeting thing.

Obviously, someone did not do his or her homework. "Bild" is the German equivalent to "The Sun", perhaps even worse.

Does he have to be the new anyone!?

Rob and Johnny...do more perfectly chiseled cheekbones exist?

Maryann said...

I like the comparison but the facts in there are a bitg off...Rob is NOT in a band atm lol and Edward is crazy? LOL

Other than that, being compared to Johnny Depp is NOT a shabby, that is a very GOOD thing, but I wish they would compare talent instead of random backgrounds that aren't 100% accurate.

Sorry Rob, but Johnny is kind of in a different league <3
Maybe you'll get there someday, but let's try not to rush it.

@ Maryann: This newspaper is known for fucking up the facts or spinning them the way they want. I wouldn't even wrap dead fish in it out of respect of the poor fish. This paper is rather big, influential and really, really awful. One of those papers you'd better not talk to. At all.

Well Rob's only 23...and Depp's 46- with the right sort of roles he'll get there......

No, he's just Rob. And we love him that way.

I think the outstanding similarity of Johnny and Rob is their interest in demanding, different and probably extreme roles.

I hope that sometimes Rob will be as great as Johnny.

I always admired Johnny for his attitude towards Hollywood (with moving to France and doing extraordinary movies like Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow or Ed Wood).

I don't like it when they compare...

Rob is Rob, and for 23 I think he can out league anyone at this point..

And Bad Girls was quite a while ago..

i can't for rob to buy me that winery!

lizzibee- that's what I mean. The media are rushing these names and expectations on him and the guy's only done one leading role in a huge film. Maybe in a couple of years.

Yeah I can see where Rob may take his career on the same path as Depp did. What some people are forgetting is we are being asked to look at Depp when he was staring out and compare to Rob now.
The biggest difference is that Depp didn't have the curse of the Internet to skyrocket him to overnight fame like Rob.
They are very similar, and will remain to be seen how far Rob decides to go, but I think he is an exceptionally talented actor with a broad range of talents and interests, and who isn't willing to be type cast.
In fact I think Rob exceeds Depp in talent and depth, lets come back to this question in 10 to 15 years and see whose right

I so love Johnny Depp. He was my first star crush. I remember I use to rush home from school to watch 21 Jumpstreet and have dreams about marrying him. Now here I am years later swooning over another actor. The only difference is that this time I would be the cradle robber instead of the other way around. Aren't you suppose to mature with age? Go figure!!

I like me some Rob and Johnny on the same page....as I did seeing Rob and Hugh together this week [insert sexy growl]

My mother has "Don Juan de Marco" as one of her favs movies. She MADE ME watch it. It is lovely! Depp is funny! Marlon Brando is amazing!

@ kymz86! Hey, twin sis!!! You'r damn right: 'does he have to be the new anyone'.

I'd say: sure not! i hate when they compare the actors... such a lack of subject, I should say...

I never even liked Johny Depp! I don't think he's atractive so why are they comparing him to Rob?!

Also, can't he just be Rob? Why does he have to be the new anyone in hollywood?

Both men are great.
But the piece is a load of crap.

@kymz86: Why he has to be the new anyone? Rob is Rob, and I think different to anyone else. I like Johnny, but Rob is different.
Hi Georgie! if u want I send u the photos u don't have

@kymz86: I agreed with u

you know...i was watching "What's Eating Guilbert Grape" today and when I was watching Johnny, I was thinking Rob. Just the demeanor of Depp in that movie I could totally see Rob turning into him. But not creepy like Depp is now. but he does have the talent =]

Rob is Rob - let him be himself.

Would love to see him in more mature roles.
Oh - who am I kidding - I'd just love to see him in ANYTHING!

( Maryann )

I completely agree with you I have the same thoughts .

But can I ask you a question I know Robert is not playing in a band now but I thought he was playing in a band called ( Bad Girls ) before is that right ? or it is just a rumor?!

--------------------

I love Johnny Deep and he is one of my favorite actor I loved him so much in his movie Donnie Brasco which is my favorite but I believe there is a different between Robert and Johnny and I don't mean that one of them is better than the other but I mean they are different in their way of acting. But I think the comparison here is in their backgrounds there is some similarity in somehow.

Thanks for posting

While both Rob and Depp are good-looking talented actors and the objects of the obsession of legions of fans, the similarity stops there, IMO.

Rob is English public school educated. He never dropped out of school and actually did sixth form and passed three A-levels and could have gone to university any time he wants. He is much more intellectual and articulate than Depp. So don't let his self-deprecating comments fool you. He couldn't be a bad student at all. While Depp was a teen idol, Rob was only trapped in his Twilight teen idol role.

On the other hand, both of them seem to have some Bohemianism streaks in them, though Depp is more so (living in Paris and all that). While Rob is more traditional except for his artistic/musical bent.

Just my 2 cents.

"Who's eating Gilbert" and "Don Juan DeMarco" are my two most favorite Depp movies.

However, it's always a bit of stretch for me to imagine Rob in any American role. I really like to see him in some quintessential English roles, something like Fred Vincy in Middlemarch. (Yeah, I am an Anglophile...)

Johnny Depp was now Johnny Depp in the beginning-I remember watching his awkwardly hot ass on 21 Jump Street back in the day. I remember thinking his career was dead in the water when I saw him in John Water's film "Crybaby." But Johnny proved me wrong! Gah, he's amazing.

I see the comparison in the sense maybe they didn't break out in some artistically challenging work in the beginning, but they had a strong sense of artistic creativity(thus the music connection, it's not just limited to acting), that helped propel them to greater things.

I agree though it does Robert no good publicly to be name compared to Johnny. Sets him up for ridicule

Sharperoni wrote: Rob is English public school educated.

Sorry, this is not quite right. Although Harrodian is an independent (i.e. private) school it is not a public school, I daresay. It's too young (only opened in 1993). Tom Sturridge went to a public school, he was educated at Winchester College (boys only; founded in 1382). Winchester is the oldest of the original nine English public schools as defined by the Public Schools Act 1868.

Sharperoni said...

Sorry, I'd thought "public school" in England simply means private/independent school.

phosphorus said...

Oh no, there is a difference, not only concerning the fees. All public schools call themselves independent schools but not all independet schools are public schools.

Sharperoni said...

I see. Thanks for clarify that.
